Traditional Unit Planning Grid

This grid is supposed to illustrate a typical approach to teaching a high school science class with ~ 50 minute periods. Each row represents 10 minutes of class, so each day includes at least three lesson segments - an opening, an activity, and a closing. In addition to naming the activities, I also listed the students artifacts, the homework assignments, and what the teacher has to do each night assuming that all the lesson plans and and instructional materials are prepared.

Some things to keep in mind:
  • This grid indicates general activities, but is not specific to any particular topic. To use this approach, you'd still have to "unpack" your learning goals and decide what objectives, experiences, artifacts would be appropriate for each lesson.
  • These activities might not work for all students.
